TA-Linux 0.2.0-rc1 released (i386)

We are pleased to announce: TA-Linux 0.2.0-rc1 (codename "Lutra sumatrana"), the first release candidate for TA-Linux 0.2.0 (stable branch).

TA-Linux is a free Linux distribution, that targets Linux power users. It's main goal is to have a small base installation that the end-user can expand to include the software he needs. The secondary goal is to support as many different Linux supported architectures as possible.

These notes are for the i386 release. Other architectures will follow soon, in the order: ppc, alpha and sparc.

TA-Linux features summary

  • Small but easy to extend
  • Optimized for i686 but still runs on i486
  • X.org 6.8.1
  • Postfix MTA
  • ext3, ext2, jfs and reiserfs
  • PCMCIA and wireless interfaces supported

  • Much nicer network configuration

  • udev with 2.6 kernel
  • Kernel 2.4.27 and 2.6.9
  • UP and SMP kernels (2.4 and 2.6)
  • Mini kernel for older (i486) systems (2.4 and 2.6)
  • Both LVM1 and LVM2 tools
  • Many bug fixes
  • Many updates to core packages, including:
    • Postfix 2.0.20
    • Perl 5.8.5
    • OpenSSH 3.8.1p1
    • OpenSSL 0.9.7d
    • module-init-tools 3.1
    • coreutils 5.2.1
    • udev 040
    • mdadm 1.8.1

Getting TA-Linux

TA-Linux can be downloaded as CD iso images or as individual files from the TA-Linux download sites. Installation from a CD is highly recommended.

Known issues with rc1

Installation:

  • Setting up the network with DHCP if updating the collection after install fails. Static IP should work ok. Does not affect generic network setup.
  • Font change have no effect.
  • Boot/root floppy images has not been tested
  • Boot floppy kernel is old
  • PCMCIA devices not supported under install
  • Only CD-ROM install has been tested, but install over network should be fine.

After install:

pcmcia might try to start twice if it fails to start

Collection:

A small number of packages might have build problems

Documentation:

Howto has not been updated for this release

There will be at least one rc release before final.
